SKIN CARE TERMS & THEIR BENEFITS

AHA – Alpha-Hydroxy Acids are water-soluble acids used in skin care to exfoliate the skin. This can repair dry, aging and sun-damaged skin.  They also help with age spots and other skin discolorations. These acids loosen and remove the top layer of dead skin to allow the new skin to emerge. Glycolic and lactic acids are AHAs. *Sun sensitivity w/ use.  *Glycolic acid recommended concentration of 5-8%.

BHA – Beta-Hydroxy Acids are oil-soluble acids also used in skin care to treat acne and blackheads because they get down into the pores and unclog them. These acids are also antibacterial and help reduce inflammation. The most common BHA is salicylic acid. *Sun sensitivity with use. *Salicylic acid recommended concentration of 2% or less.

Retinoid – A Vitamin A derivative used topically on the skin. They treat skin conditions such as acne and hyper-pigmentation. They are also used in anti-aging skin care regimens as they stimulate collagen production (collagen gives our skin bounce and production declines with aging) which helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Retinoids aid in the rate of the skin shedding the dead cells and preventing them from clogging your pores. Consistent, regular use allows the retinoid to improve your skin cell turnover/division (getting rid of old and allowing the new cells to divide and function as they should). Cell division also slows down with age, so retinoids are extremely important anti-aging products. *Sun sensitivity with use. *Retinoid recommended concentration of .04% to .1%

Collagen – A polypeptide (amino acids/protein) found in our skin, hair and nails. It gives our skin elasticity/bounce and thickness.  As we age, collagen production declines and this results in our skin thinning and losing its elasticity – which means wrinkles!

Peptide – Chains of Amino acids that when are long make up proteins in the skin and when are short, tell our skin cells how to function. Peptides applied to the skin stimulate collagen production. A common collagen-stimulating peptide is Matrixyl.

Antioxidant – They help fight free radicals (inflammation-containing substances) that are harmful and irritate the skin. Free radicals prevent collagen production from occurring at the rate that it should. Using these on the skin helps reduce free radical damage and allow collagen production to function. Vitamin C, Vitamin A and beta-carotene are examples. *Some result in sun sensitivity with use.

September 2016 Faves & Flops

FAVES

(product links for each below in red)

I'm excited to say that September has been a great month! It has definitely been full of fantastic products in beauty and fashion. I narrowed them down as best as I could. Here are my best-in-show for September. - Jill - xoxo

Beauty

  • RevitaLash Advanced Eye Conditioner - This product is outstanding. It will blow your mind. Your lashes will grow like you can't imagine. Results are noticeable in DAYS! My favorite product of all time. Has been a favorite for 3 months straight. Safe for blue and green eyes.  Revitalash
  • Elemis Pro-Collagen Eye Renewal (anti-wrinkle eye cream) & Pro-Collagen Super Serum (anti-wrinkle concentrate for face) - Permanent staples in my skin care routine. I use both daily as they plump, smooth, calm puffiness and nourish the skin.  Eye Renewal Cream  &  Super Serum
  • Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer - WOW - I've never seen a primer that fills in fine lines and pores like this!  It seriously blurred my fine lines and erased my pores. There should certainly be more hype where this product is concerned because IT WORKS - another staple.  Tarte Primer
  • Sunday Riley Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream - It's no secret to those who know me well that I am a fan of Sunday Riley's products. I am obsessed with the Luna Night Oil (Retinol product). I use it religiously. And the Tidal Cream is now another obsession from this line. It's not just an ordinary moisturizer. It plumps, hydrates, and even brightens dark spots associated with aging. I finally got two of my close friends to try it. They're head over heels for it too.  Tidal Cream
  • IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Bronzer & Naturally Pretty Vol 1 Matte Luxe Eyeshadow Palette - I posted on Instagram recently how IT Cosmetics is killing it right now. They truly are. Their brushes are amazing as well as their beauty products. The CC+ Bronzer with SPF 50 glides on beautifully and can be worn with some mascara and lip gloss and nothing else! The eyeshadow palette is full of matte shades that blend well and are so versatile with so many possible looks. The packaging is slim with a magnetic closure - perfect for travel. CC+ Bronzer &  Naturally Pretty Palette
  • Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil - Hands down my favorite makeup remover - EVER. I have tried three other very high-end cleansing oils and they do not even come close to being better. It removes makeup so easily, rinses off and leaves the face soft and without any residue or greasy feeling. It's easy, affordable and awesome. For those of you who detest removing your makeup, you need this in your life! Boscia Cleansing Oil
  • Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Luminous Blush  - Snapdragon is my favorite and I love! It's pigmented and blends out flawlessly with a glow to it. It's a blush you can wear year-round. Becca makes amazing highlighters and blushes for sure. There are several colors, all are beautiful.  Becca Blush
  • Marc Jacobs Enamored Hi-Shine Gloss - I think Marc Jacobs nailed the formula on this one. I love this gloss so much because the formula isn't too thick or sticky and it has enough color to wear alone for a great natural look. Or you can wear it right over your favorite lip stick or stain and it just makes it better. I purchased French Tickler and it's a great universal color to start. Next on my list to buy is Sugar Sugar.  Marc Jacobs Gloss
  • Moroccan Oil Dry Body Oil - This dry oil is fantastic. It smells so good and great for when you are in a hurry and forgot to lotion after shower (me all the time). It is not greasy at all. It's nice to for those days when you don't feel like perfuming it up and just want to wear a light scent that isn't overwhelming - 2 in 1 scent and moisturizer! It leaves the skin soft and with a glow.  Moroccan Dry Body Oil
  • Moroccan Oil Dry Shampoo (Light Tones/Dark Tones) - I really like this dry shampoo. I use a lot of dry shampoo, so I try them all. I like this one because it smells awesome (like the Dry Body Oil) and doesn't leave a ton of residue on my hands. It does leave some, but not too much. The spray is perfect, comes out strong but not too strong - just right. It gives great texture and body.  Moroccan Dry Shampoo

Fashion

Because I have so many fashion faves this month, I had to narrow it down to six. It was not easy AT ALL!

  • Steve Madden 'Emotions' Over the Knee Boot - LOVE THESE! Sexy, comfy, affordable!  Steve Madden OTK Boots
  • Mother 'The looker' Frayed Ankle Skinny Jeans (Guilty as Sin) - These are the perfect, distressed black jean. So comfortable. A MUST!  Mother Jeans
  • Zella 'Live In' Leggings - Where have these been all my life? Reversible for the gym or everyday. Perfection! 'Live In' - yes, for sure!  Zella Leggings
  • AF Leather Fold-Over Clutch -  Soft & chic, perfect with jeans or to dress up. The leather is supple and gorgeous.  Fold-Over Clutch
  • J. Crew 'Rider' Italian Leather Mini Bag - This cross-body bag is small (about 7 inches wide), but it's cute and holds a lot. Adorable.  J. Crew Bag
  • Banana Republic Long-Sleeve Boucle Jacket - I fell in love with this jacket the minute I spotted it in the store. I can't describe how cute this jacket is with skinny jeans and heels. Chanel-inspired for sure. OMG!   BR Boucle Jacket

FLOPS

(product links for each below in red)

Beauty

  • Oribe Bright Blonde Shampoo - I wanted to love this purple shampoo so much because it smells amazing. But, for the price point and lack of any lather whatsoever, I just couldn't. I also couldn't really tell a difference in it keeping my color bright. There are much better purple shampoos out there that are more affordable and do a better job.  Oribe Blonde Shampoo
  • Bumble & Bumble Surf Infusion Spray - I thought this would give my hair that beachy texture. It didn't deliver at all. I tried it wet and dry. I watched videos on it and tried again and again. It left my hair limp, without the texture expected, and with an unpleasant residue. I returned it. I was excited about this product, but very disappointed.  B&B Surf Infusion Spray

Skin Care Terms 101

I mentioned some of these terms in the bottom of my last post about skin care. I'm mentioning them again because the skin on your face is so sensitive, to take good care of it means understanding what ingredients are in the serums and creams you are applying to it. Some ingredients can actually be harmful to the skin if used incorrectly -- or at all...   - Jill - xoxo

Growth Factors - These can be vitamins or hormones that stimulate cellular growth. They have been used in wound-healing to promote tissue repair and regeneration. There is still a lot of controversy as to whether or not they are safe. There are some scarring and even cancer implications associated with growth factors. If you are considering using products with growth factors in them, research the growth factors they contain and ask your dermatologist about them and if there are any potential side-effects that could be harmful.
