Hey there, all, happy Friday to you! I can't say how happy I am to greet the weekend. It's been a long week with long work days/nights. All good stuff, but, I'm looking forward to sleeping in late Saturday AND Sunday. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate for some outdoor activities. My last beach day was two hours of high winds and sand in the face.
I hope you all had an awesome week and that Spring is finally in full bloom for you. But, we all know that Mother Nature is pretty indecisive and frequently changes her mind about warming up each year during Spring, as we've certainly seen this year.
In the last few years, we've experienced weather warm enough for shorts and sweater retirement in as early as March as well as a Spring that doesn't allow for certainty of no snow again as late as the beginning of May. This is exactly why I'm posting about transition toppers, why they're needed, and are staple pieces needed in all wardrobes.
Because the weather is unpredictable in early Spring with a mix of warm and cool days and typically chilly nights, you need transition top layers to add that aren't too bulky and heavy. In fact, most of my favorite transition toppers can be worn year-round, and ALL are classic staples that you need in your closet. A couple of these toppers may fade slightly in trend from year to year, but you can rest assured that they'll always make a comeback.
The five wardrobe staple transition toppers are:
If you're starting to build a new wardrobe or style edit your existing one and are missing all five toppers, I suggest narrowing down to three and you can always add the other two later:
What I'm wearing: Trench Coat (Similar and Similar) // Faux Suede Dress // Nude Heels // Beaded Bracelets // Gold Cuff Bracelet // Gold & Silver Watch // Gold Band // Hair Styling Tool // New Favorite Foundation // New Favorite Nail Polish
THE TRENCH COAT - This one, in my opinion, is the most important of the toppers. It's great for all seasons, rain or shine, and can be worn dressy like my look here with a pretty Spring dress and heels or casually with your favorite ripped jeans and v-neck tee for Sunday brunch.
I recommend buying a trench in khaki, gray, light olive, light brown because these colors are great for any season. I'm not crazy about black, dark olive, or dark brown for Spring and Summer unless specifically styled and purchased for an event or worn in the evening. I'd also stay away from trendy colors unless, of course, you already have a neutral-colored trench and want to add a brighter colored trench for fun. And for those of you who love pink, like me, light and blush pinks are considered neutrals!
What I'm wearing: Black blazer // Red Cold Should Top // White Denim Cropped Jeans // Espadrille Wedges // Gold Choker // Leopard Clutch // Gold & Silver Watch // Hair Styling Tool // New Favorite Foundation // New Favorite Nail Polish
THE BLACK BLAZER - This versatile topper, like the trench, will never go out of style. Top off a graphic tee, jeans, sneakers or loafers with this piece for a chic and comfy look. Or pair it with an LBD and heels for an interview or day at the office. It's even cute with cropped denim jeans, bright blouse, and some fun wedges like my look. You'll be perfectly attired for casual Friday at the office and happy hour following.
One important note is to be sure and stick with a simple, classic black blazer. Avoid any with cuts or details making it somewhat of a trendy piece. You can always add your own personal style edit with accessories like brooches, pocket squares, or scarves that are trending at that particular time.
What I'm wearing: Cargo Jacket // Cold Shoulder Rocker Tee // White Denim Skirt // Booties// Gold Buckle Belt // Crystal Choker // Gold & Silver Watch // Gold Bracelet // Beaded Bracelet Stack (3) // New Favorite Foundation // New Favorite Nail Polish
THE CARGO JACKET - This is my absolute favorite topper of all. You've seen me wearing my olive green cargo jacket off and on since last Fall, and it's not going anywhere. I paired it here with my favorite rocker tee and skirt, but this cargo jacket goes with everything. It's great styled with cutoff denim shorts, a tank, and booties, sandals, or sneakers. Take your favorite leggings, tee, sneakers, and throw it on for the perfect travel or Saturday errands outfit.
You don't see these go off trend completely like the denim jacket. You may not find them in every store, but you'll definitely find a few. A neutral tone cargo jacket in olive green is my favorite color choice, but khaki, light brown, gray or washed blue are great too. The cargo jacket can cover the bases for both denim and leather jackets. They're often more cost-effective, and their lighter weight lends them to be a better year-round option versus the seasonal-limited leather jacket.
These three toppers: the trench coat, black blazer, and cargo jacket can be worn all year, dressed up or down, and can be found, always, at good price points. Adding different accessories, a great skirt, shorts, or pair of jeans, a fabulous little black dress, a cool graphic tee, and, of course, some killer shoes to these toppers gives you so many fun options for looks and flavors in style. Get your topper on! - Jill xoxo
