My closest friends and family can tell you about my long-standing love affair with handbags. When most little girls were still playing with their Cabbage Patch Dolls or flipping through coloring books, I was looking through magazines trying to decide which designer bag I wanted the most and was going to buy as soon as my piggy bank was full.
As it turned out, I won $1K at the beginning of my 7th grade school year playing Bingo. I went to our church's Bingo night every Tuesday with my grandmother. On the last number, in the last cover-all game of the night, they called out I-20, and I became the richest 12-year-old in town.
It didn't take me even a second after screaming out 'Bingo' to figure out what I was going to do with my newly won fortune. I, being the good little girl, donated 10% right off the top to my church. I also tried to give my grandmother some money, and she, of course in grandmother style, refused. The rest was going to a new designer bag and makeup.
My mom took me to the mall the very next day because she knew the money was burning a hole in my pocket. We went into Lazarus, the fanciest of department stores in my area. I walked up to the Gucci counter and set my sites on the purse I had been admiring in the magazines. It took the woman about five minutes to actually acknowledge me standing there. It must have been due to me clearing my throat and saying, "Ma'am, I have $900 in my wallet. Do you want to sell me a Gucci or should I get someone else?"
I can still remember taking it out of the tissue and thinking about how beautiful it was. I couldn't wait to put my wallet and lipgloss in it and carry it with pride. It's the exact same feeling I get, even now, when I get a new handbag. It doesn't matter if it's Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chloe, or Rebecca Minkoff. I love them all. - Jill xoxo
